Rationale (200 Words)
Over the past 18 months on this course I have discovered certain key aspects of graphic design that interest me more than others. From subject matters such as pop culture, TV and film, to actual forms of design including packaging and promotion. With this brief I hope to bring together all the different aspects of graphic design that I feel I can excel in. I also want to escape the confinements of digital printing and explore the alternatives, ideally screen-printing. I want to keep this brief light hearted and entertaining, creating an end result that appeals to a target market that includes myself. I see this brief as an opportunity to expand my creative abilities, broadening my skills whilst all the while becoming a more competent designer. By the end of this project I hope to have discovered who I am and where I fit in the graphic design universe, allowing me to explore further in the second year and giving me a heads up in making a name for myself when I leave this course at the end of the third year.
Statement of Intent (200 Words)
I want to combine my interest in contemporary television with my love of packaging for this brief. After looking at several pre existing briefs and analysing each one I have come to conclusion that food packaging is what interests me most. Therefore I aim to create a food related package that promotes/celebrates (my ideal problems to tackle) a genre of current TV. Working with food obviously lends itself to creating ranges, from the types of food themselves to flavour varieties within one product. When it comes to distribution I am eager to create designs that can be both digitally printed and screen printed, meaning a few approaches to promoting my product can be achieved. I also hope to explore the avenues of online promotion and think developing my animation skills, for stings, could prove useful for the future.
Ideally I would like to create a ‘packed lunch’ that promotes NBC’s Thursday comedy nights. This places me firmly in my comfort zone for both subject; American half-hour sitcoms, and approach; food packaging.
Brief (200 Words)
I have taken elements from a few different briefs I have researched and combined them to form my ideal proposition. Most notably I have been inspired by the ‘Boost’ brief from YCN 2011, which deals with promotion of a new beverage product, and an ISTD brief from 2010 entitled ‘Channel X’ which is all about branding a new TV network dedicated to current programming. However I have also drawn from ‘The Body Shop’ in terms of ethical production methods and ‘Diesel’ in creating something that appeals to me as a targeted customer.
